Acupuncture is a medical therapy using tiny, thin, disposable, sterile needles placed into the body at specific points to increase or decrease blood flow, decrease inflammation, reduce pain, and stimulate healing.
Acupuncture has been employed as a health care modality for more than 2,500 years.
A Practitioner trained in TCM/Traditional Chinese Medicine and a Primary Care Physician. Why this is important to know.
Being a Primary Care Physician means Dr. Dave understands your modern diagnostics and blood work and is trained in Western medicine as well. He is trained in Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, as we as Pathology which is the cause of disease and its progression. So bring in you MRI reports, CT scans, X-rays, Blood Work, and any and all other diagnostics relating to your condition for him to analyze, make sense of, and even explain to you for better understanding of why you may be feeling a certain way. This will help us to better decide together what appropriate treatment method or methods may be most appropriate for your condition and severity of symptoms and also take into consideration how it is affecting your quality and enjoyment of life.
SOME SIMPLE WAYS TO UNDERSTAND ACUPUNCTURE
The Chinese use the word Qi (pronounced “chee”) to describe the energy that flows through our body.
This word may seem strange or weird to many of us, as it would if I said “mihao” or “hello” to you in Chinese. This is simply their explanation for “bios” or bio-elecrtical energy. The electrical energy used for your heart to beat, your muscle to flex , and the synopsis in your brain to “fire”. Using surgical grade stainless steel needles, acupuncture is directing energy from “a” to “b”, “b” to “c”, and eventually to get the energy to flow smoothly form a-z. Starting to make sense? Good. Now visualize the body as a christmas tree, with 12 main strings of lights, which the Chinese have described as “Meridians”.
The bio-electrical energy, or Qi, flows through these meridians like water flowing through a river. The acupuncture points act like the light bulbs on the string of lights, allowing the acupuncture practitioner to access the energy at various points, with specific functions found through thousands of years of practice and recording results. This is done to help the brain and body communicate and facilitate healing. Kind of like plugging the car in at the mechanics to get a diagnostic report and understand the root cause of the problem that is creating the undesirable symptoms.
So, when a person comes into my office and begins to describe their symptoms, I am already formulating a point prescription for the “light bulbs” or acupuncture points where energy is not flowing properly. Second, I begin to ask questions which further refine the points to be used to facilitate healing. Then, I feel the pulse at six different locations on the wrist to get an understanding of the bio-electrical energy flow through the meridians. Next, I look at the tongue to get an understanding of the environment within the body and organ systems.
Finally, I may palpate (touch or press) on the affected area to get an even greater understanding of the problem within the body. All of these techniques are used to get an understanding not only of the symptoms, but also the root cause of the disharmony within the body which has allowed these symptoms to express themselves. Now we have to change the condition within the body that allowed this to take place.
Creating an environment within yourself for the mind, body, and spirit to balance, heal, and strengthen. These diagnostic techniques have been refined over thousands of years of practicing this modality and recording results and patient feedback. If all persons in the medical field are “practicing” medicine, and “practice makes perfect”, then this style of medicine has stood the test of time and is closer to perfecting its technique more than any other!
Modern Research & Acupuncture
“There is sufficient evidence of acupuncture’s value to expand its use into conventional medicine.”
– National Institute of Health, 1997 Consensus on Acupuncture
With the support of new studies conducted by leading hospitals, medical research facilities, and scientists from around the world, acupuncture is beginning to be understood by modern science. Acupuncture is now receiving acceptance as a respected, valid and effective form of health care.
Medical Doctors now refer patients to acupuncture more than any other alternative health care provider.
